New software can track the activities of workers in large detail to improve communication, is this excessive?
Many instant messaging applications (instant messaging) and email applications show who is online at that time. A new application as a whole took a similar step further. This application can tell you if the colleague is busy working at his desk, or talking on the phone, or if he leaves the office at lunch break.
The system, called myUnity, developed at FX Palo Alto Laboratory, a research lab owned by Fuji Xerox. Applications for smart phones and desktop gives users a visual contact list, showing what their contacts.
This can help users decide when it is appropriate to contact someone, and the best way to do it. MyUnity refers to the various sources of information, including the location of phones that run applications and information processed from the webcam user. The software provides one-click interface to contact someone either via e-mail or instant messages.
Jacob Biehl, a member of the team that developed myUnity, said that the software can help users deal with increasingly fragmented workplace. "The number of people who use tools to communicate with their peers increased, and the people who work in different locations and pockets of time," said Biehl.
The software, available for Windows computers and smart phones Android, using simple color codes and text to indicate whether a person, for example, sitting alone on the workstation, or if he is away from the table but still inside the building.
This makes it easy to decide when the best time to talk with someone, or to call his cell phone, said Biehl. The interface can also display more detailed information, for example, by displaying a status message from the IM or VOIP services and drawing on the public calendar.
Information is collected by a package of software and sensors that send data back to a service running in the cloud, where client users can access it. Software installed on a corporate network to monitor where people go; and phone applications share their location information (even if only in their city is divided by another user.)
"You also can override with a custom label for a particular location, for example, their homes," When someone is in office, the approximate location within the building can be appointed through an access point Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensor tracking their phone or laptop.
MyUnity can tell if a person works at his desk to activate a webcam or security camera with a view of his office. "They look for movement in certain areas defined by the user," said Biehl told Technology Review.
Which allows part of the system not only to see the movement of someone sitting at their desks, but also to the presence of visitors. The team is experimenting with using infrared sensors which sense the presence of people but does not capture video.
Android phone software also detects whether a person is in a phone call or not, while the desktop version to know if someone actively using the computer or not. The ability to track your phone usage is added to the service desk. Users can choose how they want the system to share about them.
